Stress Management

Understanding the underlying causes of stress
Stress occurs when the demands or expectations placed upon staff exceeds their perceived ability to cope; consequently stress significantly undermines the performance and wellbeing of individuals.
It is therefore essential to understand the risks that staff may inadvertently face through their work to ensure their wellbeing and the integrity and reliability of the services they provide.
Without adequate training, staff will have no means to recognise or avoid the physical, psychological or emotional stress that they experience or endure while meeting their work obligations.
Without timely intervention this can lead to the loss of invaluable staff due to stress or post-traumatic stress disorder. This can cause considerable financial cost to the employer.
Typical Responses to Stress
Psychological and physical responses to stress vary considerably, depending upon our character and the nature and impact of our experiences, our elevated stress levels can cause a wide range of physiological symptoms and stress-related disorders.
Within the workplace the effects of stress will significantly undermine the performance, focus, motivation and wellbeing of staff.
Unless you understand how stress affects your staff, you
will have no means to recognise or control its potential to
impact upon their wellbeing.
"Remember - coping is a fire-fighting response to crisis, coping is not managing!"
Duty of care
It is essential that management recognise the underlying cause and consequent effects of stress upon staff. Without this knowledge, management will have no means to prevent the loss of highly qualified, trusted and committed members of staff.
The loss of colleagues significantly undermines the commitment, trust, goodwill and performance of remaining staff, potentially resulting in the financial burden of recruiting replacement staff and possible claims for constructive dismissal.

Am I suffering from stress?
Many people are uncertain as to whether they suffer from stress. Here are some of the symptoms to look for:
- Emotional exhaustion / loss of sleep Anxiety attacks /panic attacks
- Sense of rage / uncharacteristic outbursts of anger
- Sense of disaffection / despondency / despair / social withdrawal
- Emotional exhaustion / emotional crisis.
- Depression / severe depression / ME
- Post traumatic stress disorder
- Reliance upon prescription medication
- Excessive smoking/alcohol consumption
- Acute stress
- High blood pressure
Should we fail to recognise or ignore our symptomatic response to stress, or acknowledge and adequately confront the concerns of work colleagues family or friends; our actions will continue to undermine our wellbeing, rational and personal relationships.
All too often we only become aware of the serious nature of our condition when our symptomatic responses to stress sufficiently disrupt our daily lives, that we are required to seek out healthcare professionals to clearly identify the underlying cause of our condition.
We do however have this opportunity to take practical steps to reduce our exposure and susceptibility to stress, by investing in training and coaching that will provide us with the practical skills we will need to apply to effectively safeguard our wellbeing.
